Doug Barrenger
Director of Fluid Energy and Principal Geologist
Doug Barrenger received a BSc (geology) from the Australian National University and a Graduate Diploma in Computing Science from the Queensland University Technology. He has more than 35 years of experience in the petroleum industry. He has undertaken all facets of geological work, from the well site and operations geology to prospect evaluation, risk analysis, reserve assessment, basin analysis, portfolio valuation, and project management for both operated permits and new-venture roles and development and exploration projects. He has worked on all Australian petroleum basins, including coal seam gas (CSG, CBM) and Shale Gas, and has overseas experience in SE Asia and Europe as an employee and consultant. He has written numerous independent Expert Reports, Resource Reports, Acreage, and Resource Valuations, for IPO on several stock exchanges. Doug is a founding partner of MBA Petroleum Consultants (2001), which merged with AWT in 2009 and was later sold to Nautic in 2013. He was the General Manager Subsurface at Exoma Energy through 2012 and is a founding partner of Fluid Energy Consultants (2013). He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). Larry Franks
Director of Fluid Energy and Principal Petroleum Engineer
Larry Franks is an experienced Consultant Petroleum Engineer with wide technical expertise gained while working with a broader group of specialised consultants covering a wide range of disciplines. These include geology, geophysics, reservoir engineering, drilling, production, surface facility design, technical risk assessment and pipelines as well as the areas of environment and safety. In particular, Larry has expertise in Naturally Fractured Reservoirs and Unconventional Resources, in the evaluation and development of existing fields and in under-balanced drilling operations. Larry has over 32 years of experience in the Oil and Gas Industry covering both exploration and development projects in numerous countries including the United Kingdom, Australia, Africa, North America, Central America, China, Asia and the Middle East. His expertise has focused on tight gas and fractured reservoirs and, in particular, he has been responsible for the technical evaluation, reservoir management and development of the Palm Valley gas field in Central Australia as Magellan Petroleum’s Operations Manager (25 years at Magellan) and in assisting Central as a consultant. He also has considerable experience in the use of under-balanced drilling techniques and completion strategies, which are necessary if these types of reservoirs are to be successfully developed. The design and implementation of drilling projects is one of Larry’s major consulting activities.

James Woodger
Director of Fluid Energy and GIS Specialis
James Woodger is a GIS Technician and Draftsman with over 30 years-experience with Geographical Information Systems and Drafting. James has experience in the application of cartographic techniques and GIS technologies within the Petroleum Exploration, Utilities and Survey sectors. Most recently with Repsol, James authored a review report on the status of the existing Brisbane GIS infrastructure, report recommendations resulted in increased efficiency, reduced duplication and improved accountability. At Repsol, James also produced mapping and LiDAR analysis for the Strickland well campaign and other PNG field operations. Prior to Repsol, James was with MBA Petroleum Consultants in the role of GIS Manager, projects of note include the GIS components of the Queensland carbon dioxide geological storage atlas, The Australian shale gas atlas, ZeroGen sequestration project and GECO commercial database of Australian geoscience data. James also supplied mapping support to many Independent Expert Reports, Resource Estimations, Valuations and IPO. Other positions held by James include GIS / Drafting roles with Santos, Origin Energy, Abakos Digital Images and the Department of Survey and Land Information NZ. James is an experienced user of ArcGIS, MapInfo, QGIS, MicroStation, AutoCAD and other technical software.
Peter Roles
Operations and Facilities Specialist
Peter Roles has a BE. from the University of Queensland. He has post graduate training in Change Management, Finance, Reservoir Engineering and Two Phase flow. He has more than 40 years of experience in oil and gas development and production from onshore basins in Australia, Asia and Europe. Mr Roles has held Senior positions in Santos and Arrow Energy in Operations Management, Project Management, Asset Management and Managing Director of European based Composite Energy. Mr Roles’s positions at Arrow Energy included Asset Manager of Bowen Basin; Asset Manager of Surat Basin; Preparation of development and operating plans for 1.5MTpa LNG project from Surat Basin; Preparation of reserves and other data for final divestment to Shell and PetroChina. The Asset Management positions includes overarching responsibility for drilling; field development; operations and maintenance; and gas supply contract management. Peter’s technical skill base includes: HSE management systems; Operations Excellence Systems; “Lean” manufacturing techniques; Economic Modelling and GSA negotiations; Artificial Lift systems; Oil and Gas Transmission Pipelines; Natural Gas processing; Gas Compression; and Coal Seam gas drilling and production. Peter is currently working as an independent advisor, trainer and consultant. Peter is a 30 year member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and has been President of the Australian Pipeline Operators Group.
Ken Dups
Principal Geophysist
Ken is a proven hydrocarbon finder with over 25 years of exploration experience, including that for CSG and shale gas/oil. Has a broad technical background in both geology and geophysics, and also has considerable experience of project management, both onshore and offshore. Is adaptable and has demonstrated the ability to live and work successfully at different levels in a variety of cultures. Is experienced and up-to-date with most workstation platforms including Petrel, Landmark, Geoquest, and Kingdom (SMT), and is adept with a variety of mapping packages, in particular Petrosys. Has also specialized in risk analysis and has constantly sought to marry technical expertise with common sense.
Richard Parkes

James Crowley
Principal Geologist and Explorationist
James Crowley has a BSc Hons from Macquarie University specializing in sedimentary rocks. James has worked onshore and offshore, for minor, mid and major companies, gaining 37 years’ experience and extensive local and global exposure in all facets of oil and gas exploration and production. He is highly experienced in both conventional and unconventional reservoirs and has had the fortune of being associated with numerous oil and gas discoveries. As an executive, James has experience in liaising with company directors, joint ventures, industry forums, analysts and government departments. He has been responsible for the management of projects from creation, justification and implementation across a wide variety of green-fields to mature area exploration, development and brown-fields redevelopment programs via basin, play, field and reservoir analysis, seismic acquisition and drilling campaigns. Project types include both conventional and unconventional, primary and secondary recovery, and with sizes ranging from small geotechnical studies to large 3D seismic acquisition and multi-rig, multi-well drilling campaigns. James has retained a high level of technical skills and cross-discipline experience of the upstream petroleum industry including licencing rounds, farm-ins, asset and company evaluations. In recent years, has applied his considerable knowledge for a “start-up” publicly listed company, from prospect generation through to liaising with the board of directors. James is comfortable with individual and team roles, recruitment and personnel development, able to manage small to large teams to achieve project deliverables on time and within budget. James is a member of SPE, PESA and QUPEX and has been the Competent Person for reserves certification for Senex, AGL and State Gas.
Kym Mills-Knight
Principal Geologist
Kym Mills-Knight joined the petroleum industry in 1978 and received a BSc degree (Geology) from the University of Queensland in 1983. She has amassed diverse technical experience across multiple conventional and unconventional (coal seam gas and shale gas) exploration, appraisal and development projects within the Surat, Bowen, and North West Shelf basins of Australia; the Taranaki and Canterbury Basins of New Zealand; and the Fushan Depression of Hainan Island, PRC. Prior to her association with Fluid Energy Consultants, Kym held the position of Principal Geologist at Origin Energy / APLNG which she joined in 2004. She has worked for oil and gas operators AAR Limited (1978 – 1989), Bridge Oil (1989-1995) and New Zealand Oil and Gas (1997 – 2004). She is a member of the Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia (PESA) and an Active Member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG).

Caroline Howrihane
Finance Officer and Accounting
Caroline Howrihane is a Finance Officer and Bookkeeper with over 20 years working in a variety of industries from mineral resources, gas resources, leisure, motor retail to information technology. A natural leader and good team player, with experience in all aspects of the finance role from daily bookkeeping functions for accounts receivable and accounts payable ledgers, general ledger transactions to trial balance and the completion of Annual Financial Statements. In 1998 gained the Membership of the Association of Accounting Technicians (MAAT) in the UK and in 2015 converted this to Membership of the Chartered Accountants of Australia and New Zealand College of Accounting Technicians (CAANZ AT) Since immigrating to Australia in Feb 2001 Caroline has gained experience in Australian accounting systems and preparing statements, such as BAS, Payroll Tax, and Workers Compensation Declarations. Most recent work has been for small listed and unlisted resources companies based in Brisbane, handling all of the financial and administration aspects of the business on a day-to-day basis through to assisting with statutory reporting and company audits. Caroline has 15 years’ experience working with MYOB accounting software and is proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
